How RoboGarden journeys teach visual programming

As we all know, visual programming has grown into a huge part of the programming pie chart. The community increases every day, and more and more applications are being implemented with it.

RoboGarden’s role in promoting visual programming

RoboGarden has taken huge steps in promoting visual programming and its real-life applications. We want to talk a bit about how RoboGarden began its journey. Actually, there are multiple journeys!

The RoboGarden way

RoboGarden has divided the programming curriculum into multiple journeys. A journey is a unit in the RoboGarden curriculum that consists of multiple adventures. Each adventure has five missions that must be completed to proceed to the next adventure. Complete all the adventures to finish the whole journey.

Each of RoboGarden’s journeys takes place in a special world that could be anything from a space world, to a gathering of friends, to a world made of delicious sweets, to a volcanic island, to a treasure mountain. All these worlds have their own themes, assets, and gameplay.

What happens on a journey?

Each journey requires you to program Robo, RoboGarden’s hero robot. You must help Robo to accomplish the goal that is spelled out in each mission’s description. You begin with easy movement blocks, where you command Robo to move one cell forward or backward.

Missions will gradually become more difficult until you reach very complex function blocks like loops and conditions. You will need to use these to help Robo accomplish a difficult mission while avoiding obstacles so he can reach his destination successfully.

Throughout the journeys, you will be introduced to programming concepts from the basics to advanced commands. You will eventually transition to textual programming, where you will choose between learning Python or JavaScript. You can choose which language you want to learn based on the application you want to write.

Moving from visual programming to textual programming requires two stages. First, you will replace a missing block with its equivalent in code lines. This stage will require you to know the code that is the equivalent to each block. Second is the most advanced stage in RoboGarden, where you must write your own JavaScript or Python code from scratch. At this level, you will have completed many adventures and firmed your grip on both the basics and advanced programming concepts.

The true benefit

You will start to see the true benefits of programming in Blockly first as you get acquainted with the concepts using visual programming. You coded in Blockly and saw your mission run.

You learned everything you needed to learn using Blockly. Textual languages were just a transition done via replacement. Once you are comfortable making this transition, you can easily learn other programming languages. The concepts remain the same, so your new skills are transferable.
